Human Resources Consultant Opportunity
The Office of Human Resources seeks an experienced HR Consultant to collaborate with leaders and employees within the College of Optometry to support strategic initiatives, ensure delivery of excellent customer service and champion continuous process improvement. The HR Consultant will offer solutions to leaders and employees, execute HR operations and Workday transactions, interpret HR-related reports, lead and implement short- mid- and long-term projects meant to improve retention and recruitment, and the entire employee experience, and support strategic decisions. This position will be embedded within the College of Optometry in Fry Hall and will report to the Human Resources Business Partner. Through ongoing and regular collaboration with HR Connection (Ohio State’s HR service delivery center), HR Centers of Excellence, and Human Resources Business Partners, the HR Consultant will help ensure the delivery of distinguished and timely customer service for core HR transactions and inquiries. The HR Consultant position is a progressive step in the human resources structure within Ohio State.
The HR Consultant is responsible for providing strategic consultation in support of the college, its main clinic on campus and multiple, off-site clinic locations while having the potential to indirectly supervise at least one (1) Federal Work Study HR Assistant. This individual contributor will work regularly to achieve customer satisfaction excellence, while using a continuous improvement lens to tie business objectives to employee and manager needs on matters including performance, talent planning/workforce planning, succession planning, learning and professional development, compensation, benefits, and related areas of human resources. The role will also support leaders, managers and supervisors with HR-related activities throughout the employee lifecycle such as recruiting, onboarding, pay and job changes, performance management, life events, and terminations. The HR Consultant is responsible to ensure that life-cycle processes are complete from beginning to end including consultation, transactional data entry, communications, and post-audit of human resources transactions.
The contributions of the College of Optometry Human Resources Consultant include:
- Customer Service/Consultation (45%)
- Provides strategic consultation with leadership including guidance and training on HR processes, policies, and procedures.
- Triages and directs managers and employees to appropriate resources within human resources such as HR Connection, Employee and Labor Relations, Employee Assistance Program, Benefits, etc.
- Triages and responds to managers and employees with questions about recruitment, retention efforts, time and leave, classification and compensation, separations, and basic benefits questions.
- Works with centers of excellence partners to support employees and managers where necessary. Develops and maintains a strong relationship with Talent partners to ensure collaboration on recruitment and retention of high-risk populations for the College of Optometry and its clinic locations.
- Provides onboarding and offboarding support to managers and employees to ensure that new employees and departing employees receive access to pertinent important information.
- Supports affiliated and associated faculty needs of the college and its clinic locations.
- Transactional Work (40%)
- Where manager self-service is not implemented in the organization, the HR Consultant will be responsible for entering HR actions into Workday such as one-time payments, job requisitions, resignations, and other types of transaction work that supports the mission of the organization.
- Project Work (15%)
- Brainstorm with leadership and managers, improvements to processes meant to enhance the employee and manager experience with human resources.
- Lead and co-lead workgroups with HR Business Partner, Talent Services, and/or Employee Labor Relations, in partnership with managers, to enhance the entire employee life cycle through creative modeling and implementation.
This position will work in partnership alongside the HR Business Partner, HR Consultant for the College of Public Health and other HR colleagues across The Ohio State University’s Health Sciences’ six (6) colleges to meet faculty, staff and student needs in support of teaching, learning, patient service delivery and operational excellence. While this position will primarily be assigned in the College of Optometry, all members of the Office of Human Resources’ Strategic Initiatives’ team support a shared services model of HR delivery and benefit from a close-knit, collaborative and solutions-oriented culture. Success within the College of Optometry and Health Sciences cohort is realized by an HR Consultant who can provide a positive, can-do leadership approach through: strong relationship-building skills, excellent communication skills, flexibility to meet a diverse array of customer needs, willingness to engage and lead new projects, and an understanding of the business and mission of the OHR Strategic Initiatives’ team in support of overall college needs.

About the College of Optometry
The Ohio State University College of Optometry is a recognized leader in optometric education, clinical research and patient care. Teaching students who graduate as excellent optometrists is our primary goal. We opened a brand-new clinic building on the Ohio State campus in 2020. We offer a preclinic teaching area with 18 examination rooms and injections and contact lens labs which support our students 24/7. We host the Graduate Program in Vision Science where students pursue their Master’s Degree alongside their Doctor of Optometry degree, Advanced Practice Fellowships, and/or a PhD in Vision Science. We provide full clinical eye care services at the college, off-site in Ohio State’s Student Health Service, Upper Arlington, Pickerington, Faith Mission and Lower Lights Christian Center locations.

Required Qualifications, Skills and Experience: Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and 4 years of relevant experience .
Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
PHR or SHRM-CP. Academic or large complex organization experience. Experience working in a shared service model and leveraging centers of expertise. Proven ability to build productive working relationships with a wide variety of constituencies.
Working Conditions
This position is hybrid with the schedule dictated by the needs of the unit and unit leadership. The College of Optometry will require the HR Consultant to be on-campus a minimum of two (2) days per week. The schedule could change based upon college support needs; thus, the HR Consultant will need to be flexible to provide such coverage as needed/requested being that they are a leader in the unit.
