Department Summary: The Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology advances our knowledge of life on earth at the cellular and molecular levels. Our mission is to educate the next generation of scholars, professionals, and citizens of the world by fully integrating our students into cutting-edge research activities, including hands-on participation in the process of scientific discovery. Our faculty conducts research with a variety of models including Arabidopsis, Drosophila, zebrafish, mouse and stem cells to address the most pressing problems in biology, health and sustainability. Position Summary:
The Academic & Staff Personnel Manager has primary responsibility for the management of administrative operations for all personnel and payroll activities of the departments/units served by the Molecular Biology Group. One of these departments contain the majority of the teaching and research activities: Molecular, Cell & Developmental Biology; the Minor in Biomedical Research; and the Life Sciences Research Core Facilities. In this multi-faceted organization, payroll and personnel affairs are especially critical to teaching, research, and administrative support, which must be carried out at a high level in all areas. The major duties include planning, directing, organizing, and controlling the activities of all human resources and payroll functions for the departments/units. The Staff & Academic Payroll and Personnel Offices provide payroll preparation, processing, and monitoring; benefits orientation and analysis; work authorization determination of eligibility; personnel analyses and reports to the Chairs, Vice Chairs, faculty, and other administrators. Staff and academic employment are described and governed by UC policies, UCLA policies and procedures, College of Letters & Science policies and procedures, labor agreements, and Federal and State laws and regulations. Enforcement of these policies, procedures, regulations, and audit requirements are all critical and require close oversight.
Salary & Compensation: *UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. - 1.Excellent strategic planning, leadership, organizational and visionary skills to manage the human resources of complex, research intensive organization of academic departments and research and instructional units in a major research university. (Required)
- 2.Demonstrated understanding of the organizational and operating structures of a University and its academic departments and research centers. (Required)
- 3.Interpersonal skills to diplomatically establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, researchers, students, administrators, andstaff employees to create a harmonious and productive work environment. (Required)
- 4.Demonstrated skill in communicating effectively with faculty, staff, and students, including skill in oral and written communication, such as writing concise, logical memoranda, operating procedures, administrative reports andin-depth analytic reports. (Required)
- 5.Demonstrated leadership ability to analyze complex issues and act to expedite decisions. (Required)
- 6.Substantial experience in academic personnel/personnel administration/human resources and preparation and administration of monthly and bi-weekly payroll and monthly benefits. (Required)
- 7.Demonstrated knowledge of policies, labor agreements, and procedures in the areas of academic, staff, and apprentice personnel and University labor and employee rules and regulations. (Required)
- 8.Ability to supervise and evaluate performance of subordinates. (Required)
- 9.Demonstrated ability to use and review the various UCLA records systems including UCPath, TRS, JASMINE, CDW/COGNOS and LSIG/LAPSDB. This includes demonstrated proficiency in use of spreadsheet, database, reporting and word processing software. (Preferred)
- 10.Ability to work independently, accepting challenging circumstances, and taking initiative to solve problems where solutions are not always readily apparent. (Required)
- 11.Ability to set and meet frequent deadlines. (Required)
- 12.Ability to exercise tact and discretion in matters of confidentiality. Ability to listen effectively and to deal with sensitive information. (Required)
