Position Summary
The Senior Colleague Relations Specialist is responsible for modeling the Compassus values of Compassion, Integrity, Excellence, Teamwork, and Innovation and for promoting the Compassus philosophy, using the 6 Pillars of Success as the foundation. S/he is responsible for upholding the Code of Ethical Conduct and for promoting positive working relationships within the company, among all departments, and all external stakeholders. The Senior Colleague Relations Specialist is responsible for overseeing the resolution of complex employee relations matters, performance management issues, policy violations, and interpretation and investigation of colleague complaints and/or conflict resolution on behalf of the company. This position interacts with individuals across the organization to mitigate risk to the organization and ensure that outcomes align with Compassus values including fair and equitable treatment of all colleagues. This individual works quickly and thoroughly to investigate and make appropriate recommendations to resolve all workplace conflicts and complaints.
Position Specific Responsibilities
- Responsible for planning and investigating complex and sensitive employee concerns and investigations, including interpersonal conflict in the workplace, terminations, employee complaints, ethics reports, and allegations of harassment, discrimination, and retaliation in a timely manner.
- Offers guidance and training to lower-level Colleague Relations team members.
- Identifies and addresses colleague relations issues providing advice and guidance to the HR and business leaders for issues such as policy interpretation, performance management, disability and leave management, terminations, conflict resolution, disciplinary actions, or other issues representing significant risk to the organization.
- Assists leaders with developing appropriate constructive disciplinary actions as necessary to address areas of concern or infractions.
- Prepares thoughtful, reasonable, and independent investigations summaries for internal and external stakeholders to close out ER cases.
- Provides expert consultation, guidance, and coaching to leaders and HR Business Partners on high-risk/complex issues to address employee behavior and performance concerns.
- Creates electronic organization practices for the retention and retrieval of investigation materials.
- Manages and administers a broad range of tasks and projects, including the development, implementation, interpretation, and administration of policies and procedures to ensure and enhance the company's capacity to handle employee relations matters and ensure compliance with federal and state labor laws.
- Explains and provides advice to workers about company policy, rules, regulations, and laws and their need for compliance.
- Consults with Legal Counsel on Employee Relations issues and attend mediations and depositions for the company as needed.
- Anticipates the evolving needs of the business, coach and counsel leaders and manager, and help to lead change efforts.
- Manages metrics and reports on colleague relation activity to management within recommended timelines.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and/or Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience in human resource roles with at least three (3) years of concentration in Colleague Relations required.
- Experience conducting and managing investigations of complex/sensitive workplace complaints, and government agency claims and audits, including EEOC and state discrimination charges and OFCCP audits, and internal ethics reports required.
Skills
- Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
- Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from leaders, colleagues, investors, and external parties. Strong written and verbal communications.
- Other Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of relevant state and federal employment laws including, but not limited to, Title VI, ADA, FMLA, FLSA, ADEA, etc. Ability to analyze complex issues and facts and summarize essential issues to various audiences. Ability to work with and positively influence peers and management. Self-motivated and high endurance with critical attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines and reporting. Ability to understand, read, write, and speak English. Articulates and embraces hospice philosophy.
Certifications, Licenses, and Registrations
- PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP certification preferred.
Physical Demands and Work Environment: The demands of this role necessitate a team member to effectively perform essential functions. Regular standing, walking, and manual dexterity are fundamental, along with the ability to lift and move objects up to 25 pounds. Visual acuity requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
